Steve Smith’s jaw-dropping effort deny David Warner’s six in BBL match


Sydney Sixers cricketer Steve Smith continued his impressive wicketkeeping record with a stellar performance against Sydney Thunder in the BBL 2024-25. Steve Smith made an acrobatic save near the boundary line at Sydney’s iconic Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday 17 January.

Steve Smith leads Sydney Sixers in a crucial Sydney Smash clash against Sydney Thunder, led by veteran opener David Warner Team (Sydney Thunder). This game may shake up the top three rankings of the BBL 2024-25 season. However, the match was postponed due to heavy rain after just five overs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Sydney Sixers win bat flip and elect to field

The Sydney Sixers won the bat-turning contest and elected to field, with Warner and Australian Test starlet Sam Konstas starting for the Thunder. Jack Edwards started with the first over but Warner soon reached the boundary before rain interrupted play 1.4 overs later.

The match restarted under modified conditions with 19 overs for each side. Constas scored nine off 14 balls, including two fours, before being dismissed by Edwards.

The incident occurred on the first ball of the fifth over when David Warner tried to disturb bowler Todd Murphy. Warner steps out and throws the ball to long range. Steve Smith produced a stunning effort to save six runs.

Smith threw the ball back down the field, then stepped out and returned to complete the catch. With no one nearby to help, the former Australia captain saved his team four runs with some brilliant fielding.

Steve Smith has been a standout Test star in Australia’s T20 competition this season. He scored a remarkable century against the Heat in the first game and followed it up with a 50-run performance in the second game against the Strikers.

Sydney Thunder scored 36 points with a margin of 5.1 overs after being bowled out by Sydney Sixers at the SCG. David Warner scored 22 points and Hugh Weibgen scored 1 point.
