Switch 2 Game Backwards Compatibility: What We Know

Nintendo has a big reveal of Transfer 2 on Thursday, posted a video showing off the new hardware. Nintendo didn’t offer many technical specifications, but it confirmed that the Switch 2 has backwards compatibility to play Switch games.

At the end of the announcement video, a slide appears confirming that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch physical and digital games. However, there is a note that some games “will not be supported or fully compatible” with the Switch 2.

Nintendo did not provide any additional details about the incompatible games and did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

One game that probably isn’t backwards-compatible is Ring Fit Adventureis a fitness game released in 2019 by Nintendo. While the actual game itself will likely work as it can be plugged into the Switch 2, what could be an issue is the Ring-Con as it is an accessory that requires the Switch Joy-Cons to be attached via rails . The Switch 2, however, has new Joy-Cons that appear to be attached magnetically. Of course, what can correct this issue is that the Switch 2 will also be backwards compatible with the original Joy-Cons.

Along with backward compatibility, the Switch 2 video reveal shows other major changes that will come with the new hardware. It includes a larger screen, two USB-C ports instead of one, a newly designed larger kickstand that can be relined and Joy-Cons that seem to work like on a computer mouse. Nintendo plans to hold a Switch 2 Direct show on April 2 to provide more details. It will also hold in-person events in Dallas, Los Angeles and New York, giving fans the chance to use the Switch 2. No release date or price for the Switch 2 has been announced.
