Syria’s foreign minister says lifting sanctions is ‘key’ to the country’s economic stability

Syria’s top diplomat said on Wednesday that the lifting of economic sanctions imposed during the rule of ousted President Bashar al-Assad was “crucial” for stability in the country. Syria’s new government is lobbying Western powers to lift sanctions that were aimed at Assad’s government over its brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011, which sparked the country’s civil war. Nearly 14 years of conflict have destroyed Syria’s infrastructure and economy.
