Thailand legalizes same-sex marriage, couples say “I do” in unison

The BBC spoke to a Thai LGBTQ couple who held a mass wedding on the same day that same-sex marriage was legalized in Thailand.

More than 100 couples were married on Thursday at Siam Paragon, a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok, after the law came into effect.

LGBTQ couples now have the same rights as other couples to manage assets, inheritance, adoption and make decisions about their partners’ medical care

People across Thailand are trying to outdo each other with parties and gifts like cupcakes, bags and free flights to celebrate the legal milestone.

Thailand has long been seen as a haven for LGBTQ people and remains an outlier in Asia, but activists say they are fighting for more change because many laws there are still not gender neutral.
