Trump calls Jack Smith a ‘disgrace’ after special counsel resigns from Justice Department: ‘He came away empty-handed!’

A footnote in the filing states: “The special counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and resigned from the Department of Justice on January 10.”

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday to criticize Smith’s investigation into the incoming president.

“Unhinged Jack Smith was fired from the Department of Justice today. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his country. After spending over $100 million on a witch hunt against Trump, he walked away empty-handed!” Trump wrote.

Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate Trump’s role in the case. January 6, 2021, Capitol riots and his mishandling of confidential documents.

Smith served as the acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2017 during Trump’s first administration.

Smith’s resignation comes ahead of the release of Smith’s case report into Trump’s role in the Capitol attack. A recent court filing shows Garland plans to release the report soon, possibly before Trump takes office next week.

In a recent letter to me, Garland wrote: “As I have made clear to every special counsel I have served since I took office, I am committed to conducting as many of my duties as possible consistent with the requirements of the law and department policy. Trump said after the cases were dropped that the cases “should never have been brought.”

“These cases, like all the others I have been forced to live through, are hollow and lawless and should never have been brought,” Trump said in an article published in Truth Social. “This is a one-time Political hijacking was a low point in our country’s history.
