‘We Couldn’t Stay’: A California Family’s Life After Evacuation

Shortly after the fires broke out in Los Angeles, Bethany Martinez and her daughter evacuated their home on the Altadena-Pasadena border after losing power and heat. They wait until they feel it is safe enough to return.

“They eat food here. Now we are staying at Airbnb. I come back and forth to get food, or water and things like that. Really, let’s come get hot meals and then come eat. A lot of things that have been helpful are all the donations and things that these people have provided for us. And they will have a fire rescue night. And then this other place called Altadena Girls, they also give away some stuff.” “Without school, I really don’t have much to do. But when I hang out with my mom, aunts, and cousins, they fill up my schedule. Even though I don’t really like math and I can’t play all the time, I really like school and spending time with friends. I always knew a fire would happen eventually, but I didn’t know it would be like this — destroying houses wherever it went and blocking things. And yes, why people can’t have a home or go back to their home to get what they need.” I never thought this would happen to Altadena, our neighborhood. It will never look the same. It won’t be the same again.”
